Who won Deadline Day?

My votes go to Pittsburgh, Pheonix and Calgary.

Calgary got the big name in Jokinen.

Pittsburgh got the 2-3 pieces they needed witout giving up a ton.  Guerin for a conditional 3rd, 4th, or 5th pick could be a steal.  Whitney for Kunitz looks better and better every game (Whitney as 0 points in 3 games, Kunitz has 6 in 3 games).

Pheonix had a great FHL GM type rebuild.

PETR PRUCHA, NIGEL DAWES, DMITRI KALININ, SCOTTIE UPSHALL, , MATTHEW LOMBARDI, BRANDON PRUST, CONDITIONAL FIRST ROUND PICK, SECOND ROUND PICK, 4th round pick
for
Morris, Carcillo, Jokinen, Tellqvist

And the last team to do a FHL style rebuild? The Capitals about 5 years ago, looking now I would say that worked too.

Bruins win big :)

Like the Montador pick up a lot Nokelainen wasn't doing much.

Recchi will get Axelsson off the PP ...(PUKE)...... but huge gamble giving up Karsums and Lashoff.  I think Karsums will be a decent NHL 3rd liner and Lashoff is boom or bust and will be the deal breaker.

Edmonton also totally steals O'Sullivan they now have 4 good players and could maybe compete with my senior hockey team.

Calgary added what they needed too and could realistically win the cup. I wouldn't have said that this morning and never really gave up much.

Pittsburgh got themselves into the playoffs but they still have depth issues.

Phx totally hosed the NYR and Phi

Toronto actually did a great job getting picks for what they gave up and picking up Gerber and shutting down Toskala helps them :)

SJ added some solid depth with Moen and Huskins I like both guys for depth

cant tell you how psyched i am for the oilers... osullivan has a left handed shot and a great release... exactly what the oilers have needed alongside hemsky for years...

i just heard from an oilers personnel guy (rob daum) on team 1260 that at the january personnel meetings they thought kotalik would be a great fit for us down the stretch.

So Tambellini turns an UFA forward with 16G 11A 27P in 63 GP (Cole), and a 5th round pick to get an UFA forward with 13G 19A 32P in 56 GP (Kotalik)
AND THEY ALSO GET PATRICK OSULLIVAN who has 14G 23A 37P in 62 GP. +3 on that team in LA too??
Not to mention the fact he just turned 24 years old last month and is signed through 2010-2011 (So 2 more full seasons after this one) and then he turns into an RFA!!!

Although Osullivan is due 2.95 million per year, so that is worrisome if the oilers really are gonna offer money to Jagr or Hossa again this offseason.

Tambellini makes a great deal though, IMO!

Discuss if you wanna!

I would've become violently ill if the Penguins had picked up Recchi. Ian and I took the biggest breaths when we found out he was heading to Boston.

I liked what the Flames, Coyotes, Leafs (for once - except for Gerber), Penguins, Carolina and Chicago did. I think they all helped themselves out. The Sens moves weren't bad, too.

Philly and the Rangers made some of the worst deals of today. Glad they're in the Penguins division. I think Glen Sather has spent too much time watching Antique Road Show with that blue-line.

Overall, I think if I had to pick one winner, Calgary put themselves in a better position than any other team since the begining of today towards a playoff run.

Rex, please reference your post about how awesome the Oilers were going to be this season for my response.

LA lost the three team deal getting williams who's good when he's healthy, but how many times has he missed games this year?

Oilers made a good pick up, basically trading Cole for Kotalik and O'Sullivan

Glad that Cole is going back on Staal's line, should rejuvenate both players play....

Cole for Osullivan and a 2nd? Great trade for the Oilers.

Now let me ask a question, what the frig were the hurricane thinking?

Cole is a pending UFA at 4 million. O'sullivan (who's better already) is an RFA at 2.9 for 2 years. If it was Cole for O'sully straight up, I would have said it was already a killing- then you add a pick around 45 to boot! Where do these's GMs come from?

If I was Edmonton I would have just kept the 2nd but oh well- still a good trade for them.

You have to think Carolina has a pretty good idea they can resign him. Or Staal will stop sucking if he comes back

Cole for O'Sullivan + pick was friggin robbery. Pure desperation by Carolina trying to recreate what it had when it won the cup. Guess what, a team that is a longshot to make the 2nd round just gave up a very good young player and a solid draft pick for a player they could have signed for free this summer.

And, what is even worse, O'Sullivan has been the more productive player the past two years.

I think Carolina is one of the worst run teams in the league. Granted they did win a Stanley Cup so I can't blame them totally but hypothically if Edmonton had scored a few more goals in Game 7 it would have been all for nothing.

They dealt Jack Johnson to get a bit more cap space; traded for Weight and Recchi for a 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th.

If everything doesn't come together perfectly for them that is a devastating loss.

If he signs before UFA begins; I wouldn't have been surprised to see him resign their if Edmonton held on to him and he hit UFA.
