With the Bruins team in a season long funk, and appraoching the halfway point. The Bruins have made a trade to address their goaltending situation for this year in hopes to get back into the playoff picture.
Leaving Boston is Ray Emery, Rob Scuderi, David Backes, and prospect Stefan Legein. Coming to the team from Ottawa is goaltender Chris Mason, veteran center Trevor Linden, 750k and SJ 6th.
"We really did not want to deal Backes with his great season he is having in the NHL. But for this year he was a spare part. Chris gives us some stability in net for this year and next, and we will have no problem going to him to keep Ryan fresh. Trevor is expected to play on the fourth line and kill penalties. We hope he will bring invaluable leadership to the team down the stretch and into the playoffs."
Not a huge trade namewise, but a side note to the deal, which is definetely newsworthy in Boston. Is that the Bruins own the Senators 1st round pick. With them downgrading in net to Sugar Ray Emery, the hope is the Senators will continue to spiral downward, thereby increasing the positioning of that 1st pick. The potential change there alone could salvage this deal longterm for the team if the Sens drop into the bottom 5.
