Blake Wheeler the UFA

I am relatively shocked the Coyotes let this guy walk. What kind of compensation they gonna get cause of it? They get a 2nd rounder or what? I forget how it works.

This is crazy though. I hope other prospects don't get this idea. I think it only works for NCAAers or something if I am correct but not sure.

I hope the Flames somehow sign this guy, thatd be pretty wicked. We need centers.

ppl who dont know how the NCAA works... they have to fulfill their requirement with their school... if they reject and dont want to graduate they are free to do so... but must be signed immediately otherwise they will go unrestricted.. and for a guy who has yet to lace the skates in the nhl.. and has lots of promise.. he will be a target for sure in the off season signings....

now the bad side of what he is doing... hopefully he doesn't get snubbed by every team becuase if he dumps on phoenix and also dumps on college.. 2 things ... gms will start to think where this guys heads at.... he's still a rookie and should get no more than the entry level contract....

the actual rule..

Under terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, any player who does not remain a college player through the graduation of his applicable class , must submit a letter stating his intention to turn professional.  Upon submission of that letter, the drafting club shall have 30 days to sign the player.  If the player and team cannot reach an agreement within that 30 day period, the player becomes a free agent.  Wheeler submitted his letter of intention to turn professional on May 8.

It had nothing to do with Phoenix letting him walk, they tried to sign him and he refused to sign the deal they offered, which I believe was the rookie max.

I'm sure they held back some financial parameters to the contract that Wheeler was looking for in specific, bonuses. Sure Wheeler must not want to play there and was playing hard ball but I think there was some more "give" that PHX could have offered.

Anyone know the compensation they'll be getting? When MIN let AJ Thelen walk they got a 2nd didnt they? Will it be the same here?

Yotes will get 35th pick in the draft as compensation.

*supposedly* (we only know what the GM's tell us) but they offered Wheeler the MAX under the old CBA..and under the new CBA he won't get as much from any other team. It's not possible

So I think it's pretty clear he never had any intentions of playing for Phoenix. He probably goes to like Minnesota or Detroit or something weirdface

Yes there is a max they can offer outside of bonuses and Id be shocked if they hadn't offered that, not to mention many teams not offering their 1st rounder the max...

Anyways, outside of that though they can offer bonuses. Look at Jonas Hiller's entry level deal. It had 2.5M in bonuses in it. Albeit hard ones to acheive, but isn't this possible for Wheeler too? I am not sure on what the max bonuses a rookie can get but I wonder if it's possible Phoenix did not offer the max in that area.
