The New York Rangers in a stunning development late Tuesday night decided to shop around the teams #1 asset in Scott Gomez, along with the teams #1 goalie Tim Thomas. The Rangers are happy to bring in a younger, cheaper replacement for Thomas in Dany Sabourin who has great numbers this year reviving his career in the NHL with 2.69 G.A.A. and .905 save percentage and 20 games played. He will rerate nicely and along with Mike Smith and Mikael Tellqvist all rerating well, the team will finally be set between the pipes for next year.
Also coming to the Rangers is Raffi Torres who has slumped bigtime this year and will be a project who we hope will rebound to the former 26 goal plateau he once achieved. Lastly the centerpiece for the deal was brining in the two 1st round picks in NYR 1st and Dal 1st both in 2008. The Dallas pick is set to be around 13-18, and NYR is pencilled from 13 down to as low as 4th possibly, only time will tell. Either way the club likes the possibilities of brining in two young blue chip talents to further this roster in the right direction.
With the abscence of Gomez as the #1 the club allows for young Patrick O'Sullivan to see lots of ice time for the remainder of the season with the big club, and Sean Avery has been moved to center to fill the whole until O'Sullivan is ready for big minutes.
The club now turns it attention to moving "The Hammer" Roman Hamrlik who is enjoying a great rebound year in Montreal on the top powerplay unit and will enjoy a great rerate. Brendan Morrison who was on just under a point a game pace before getting injured is also up for grabs for youth as well. Thanks to both Dallas and Philladelphia gm's in helping orchestrate a top notch 3way deal.
