Ferguson Fired

And while I don't give a rat's ass about anything concerning the leafs, i just found this quote hilarious

"Our ideal candidate will be a long-term builder and a short-term fixer" explained Peddie.

Long-term builder but also looking to contend? So the new GM has to trade away veterans for better and younger stars? No wonder the Leafs are 14th in the conference

It is obvious that the problem of the Leafs is Peddie, and Ferguson was simply a pull string puppet, however Fergie certainly needed to be replaced as well ,and I am very happy that Maurice for now anyhow, has gotten away from the wrath of the management.
Another beauty quote from Peddie: " We don't want to rebuild for the next few seasons, we want to contend every year "

I believe we tried this with Pat Quinn and fell short every time, cause they were never willing to make the next move to put us over the top, and this was without a cap.  It will never happen with a cap and I can see the farm going all to hell once again.

On a good note I think Fletcher as an interim GM,     ( and I do stress INTERIM ) is not a bad move and if rumours persist, Doug Gilmour has been mentioned as a possible student of Cliff's for a potential full time GM job with the Leafs in the near future, which I would really like a ton.
Can't do any worse than Ferguson.

Now if the damn brass would just keep their grubby hands off the product and let the guys do their job.  HERE US PEDDIE !!!!!    bleh

I don't think we are going to see as many players becoming NHL GMs after they retire. The job has become much more advanced. Seems like more and more GMs have MBAs for the business side of the job.

It sounds like Peddie is done on the hockey side. He said during the press conference that in the summer they will be looking for a President/GM to take over all hockey operations. Before Fletcher signed on he had a list of requirements and one was that he had full control. So unless Peddie changes things, he is out of making decisions for the time being.

It was also revealed that JFJ tried to convince the board in the past to blow up the team and start over with youth. This idea was turned down by the majority of the board and then went on their way of trying to squeeze into the playoffs again. While I think it was time for JFJ to move on, I don't think it was entirely his fault for the mess the Leafs are in.

My personal opinion is that the Leafs need to go into a quick rebuild.

Assess their current strong points and keep them. Get rid of everything else.  I think it's the only way the Leafs succeed in the next few years, aside from a miracle.
