I don't understand such a willingness to help fellow Gms out of the cap mess they've putthemselves in? Unless the trade is just to good to be true, why not just make them buy out their contracts or lose there best player...just a thought haha

Maybe teams are looking to better their teams as they see fit, and aren't even considering the cap issues of other teams. Maybe GMs have good relationships.
A good example, in the BRHL1, a GM asked about a depth guy,(He is also in the BRHL2) and I had one, so I let him go for next to nothing to help him meet roster requirements. Some GMs will hose a guy for overpayment because he is in a bind.
Well, in Chicago, we aren't like that. We like the spirit of competition and goodwill between GMs. We like to build relationships like GMs in the NHL do. Joe in NY and us are like two teams in the NHL like Edmonton and Boston that regularly move pieces back and forth when they see benefit. And lots of the BRHL2 GMs and us have similar relationships with us.
The reason that GMs have good relationships with other GMs is because they treat each other with respect and looking for mutual benefit. It isn't all about screwing the other guy as some GMs might feel.
If someone needs a roster guy and I have one, I won't hold him hostage because I can, I will help him out, because I can.
We are trying to better our team as best we can, but also have good relationships along the way. (Obviously this thread was about our two deals. )
George: Well, if it was about community, turnover wouldn't have been as high and if it was about community and friendship, then as you have said previously the friendly discussion would be higher.
What Bryce and Eric would like the league to be and what it is are two different things. They might WANT to have it be a friendly little league with a little cash on the line. It isn't...well at least right now.
George: You suggest that discussions generate community. This league isn't about community. This league is about money and trying to beat the other guy. If you want chatty, your other league is where you should go.
Please save the whole saint routine George- you only just said that it's about relationships because you needed something out of them.

But he's right in alot of cases, it's not about holding people hostage, look at Rob B in Ottawa and my team, our negotiations, even on our blockbuster, take like 2 minutes, we don't go in trying to screw each other, simply trying to piece things together. IO think the bigger point is the difference in trade tactics, where some GMS are out to try and rape people in a deal, and those negotiations usually take days because concessions get made. Whereas for other teams to make a deal it takes minutes, because the offers are well though out and bringto the table what others need. I hardly consider that charity.

The difference between getting along in business relationships is much different than forging friendships.
That being said, I have great relationships with many of the BRHL GMs, many of which are in more than one league.
Generally though, I don't go for beers with any of these GMs, post in any of the chatty threads, and you can check that too if you like. There is a big difference between having good business relationships and being buddy buddy.
But, I will concede that I sure have softened since those posts......and you can ask any GM that is in not only this league or any other with us of how we deal with people.
And if you want to debate this, just like every other discussion, there are always a few GMs that want to p.i.s.s. on other GMs and everything they do, and obviously, our mutual respect and good dealings with other GMs helps us in negotiations.
Will Chicago ever deal with the few teams that are adversarial, not likely but if a deal is mutually beneficial, I don't see why not.
One other point is the addition of more BRHL1 GMs makes this a better league, like Ian and Rob etc etc.
If you can make a deal that is beneficial to your team then why wouldn't you help out another team? Yes, they may be forced to buy out a player otherwise, but that doesn't help you.
That is a fact Gareth...sorry, since you left BRHL1, I erroneously left you out....another stellar addition. But like I said, it is much easier to have community when most of the GMs are of the quality of the BRHL1 GMs. I know Eric and Bryce had hoped that this league would be the same. Ultimately though they don't have the same, but as they add those guys, community is much easier.
To clue Luke in....with the addition of the GMs I mentioned....the amount of GMs that are or were in BRHL1 are....
Rob Ives Kirk Bryce Eric Rick Myself Rick Ian Jesse Jordan Rob Botham Steve Rod Gareth Garrett Alex
The addition of the few more guys from the BRHL1 sure changes things, well for me anyways. Some of the good relationships carry over.
I still am not all that huge about going on the boards and chit chatting about stuff, but hockey talk....these guys are tops.
First let me start by saying that I'm not afraid to drop any trade if I think it will hurt the long term success of my team even if they need the help (due to cap reasons or whatever) no matter who the other GM is, as I'm sure many can attest to, but if I can improve my team in any deal even if it's helping out another GM get out of a cap problem I'll make the trade. I will certainly work harder with certain GMs because of past trades I have made with them then others but Ive never tried to take advantage of another GM in any situation.
Now as far as screwing another GM just because he has cap issues and trying to use that to my advantage, that makes no sense to me there are plenty other GM's he could go to, and if I'm stuck in the same position I don't want half the GM's in the league looking to screw me. So because I have dealt fairly with the GM's in this league I know I can go out and get a fair deal myself in the future (even if I'm sitting on the cap) from the majority of the GM's although I know there are a few that would still try and take advantage of my position even if I haven't done that to them in the past because that is just the type of GM they are.

Wow. This kind of baffles me. I dont think id look to take advantage of a GM as my first order of business, but I sure as heck would try to win a trade every time I negotiate.
Obviously there are plenty of times where both teams benefit from the trade, and Id pull the trigger on those too, but man some of you guys got a weird philosophy, to me at least, towards competition when money is on the line.
Nonetheless, I guess its pretty much a pointless debate. Im just a little shocked to see some people who have outright said community is NOT SOMETHING THEY JOINED THE LEAGUE FOR, now saying that its something they value.
