In one swift move tonight, the Los Angeles Kings filled a giant hole in the goaltender position while creating another large whole up front. Gone from the LA Kings is center David Legwand and Philly's 2nd round pick next year. Coming to Hollywood is goaltender Cristobal Huet.
The Kings management felt Legwand was more easily replaced in the free agent market than a goaltender. Yes, there were the likes of Hasek out there, however, he's 42. If LA were to bomb next year, it would be a waste of money to sign a goalie like that. Huet will be around for at least 4 years. Huet also has solid goalie ratings, better than his OV would suggest as he was hurt for a large portion of the season and a lower DU rating is pushing his OV down compared to other goalies. Sean Burke is a solid backup who will be able to pick it up when Huet needs a rest.
Legwand was really the Kings only really credible forward, along with Ryder, and he leaves a huge hole up front, however there are several free agents out there that can replace him and LA does feel they have some prospects they can move to pick up some pieces to fill the void.
