The staff down in Carolina is just getting back from a few days of R & R in Pine Hurst, after what they feel was a very very good draft.  The teams goals were to use one of the first round picks to bring in a proven NHL player, continue to build up their prospect pool, and get as many NHL ready or rated prospects as possible.  Here is how the draft went for the Canes....

Pick 15: Traded to the Florida Panthers for:
Keith Tkachuk: A Proven NHL talent and top two line player, will play with Spezza and Mike Knuble to form a very big and strong first line, even with his cap number we were at or under 25mill and were willing to take it on for a one year deal

Jonathon Quick: Helps in our prospect Goalie pool, we wanted to make sure we added at least one in this draft, Quick was someone we had targeted in the last draft

Canes get pick 25 in the first round

Pick 19:Canes take Michael Grabner (6' 0" 170 RW)
"Grabners primary asset is his lightning-fast speed and acceleration.  He handles the puck well at top speed and is deadly on the rush."
We like the fact that he has already been introduced to the NA game and the fact that he will be in the AHL this upcoming season.  With a good season we could see him playing beside Jason Spezza in 2 years.

Pick 25: Traded to NJ for:
Petr Kalus, Another RW addition for the Canes, we needed to make sure we addressed that position in this draft.  We were weak both on our Pro team and our farm team.  Along with that he fits our mold of turning our draft picks into players that will play right away on our farm and be NHL ready with in a year.  Having already played a fair amount of time in the AHL and having played very well in his time in Boston.  We think Peter will really do well if pared with some of the top line talent with the Wild.  With the amount of teams that have already asked for this player we know that we were not going to get anyone else with his value out of the draft pool with this pick, and with the addition of another third it would give us more flexibility later in the draft.

Canes get a 3rd round pick number 65.


With another target still on the board the Staff felt it was time to deal again and move up.  And with 3 third round picks the Canes traded pick 49 in the second and pick 75 in the third for pick 41. 

With that pick Pick 41: CORY EMMERTON (5' 11" 177) C/LW: A talented playmaker with offensive flair and a nose for the net, Emmerton is the type of forward that makes those around him better. He has a knack for finding the open man, or hitting a teammate in full-stride for an offensive chance.  We hope that he will be playing in the AHL this season but if not we still have two current farm C's that are in his same mold so we can afford to wait another season on him.

Going into the third round there were two players we had on our board that we really wanted.  We got them both, it cost us some late picks in the draft but we were still able to keep our 4th so we were happy to make another deal.

Pick 65:Kaspars Daugavins, LW
He is another skilled quick forward that is playing in NA, as an orginazation we really feel that if we are going to take a European born player that they must be playing currently in NA.  Kaspars fits that mold and he has been tearing it up this season in the OHL "The creative left-winger scored at nearly a point-per-game pace tallying 18 goals and 60 points in 61 games. He had some very impressive streaks including a six-game span in October where he recorded 14 points. Daugavins finished second in scoring on the Majors and sixth overall among rookies in the OHL, a group that included Patrick Kane, Steven Stamkos, and Sam Gagner. "  He will be playing this season in the AHL and will be close to an NHL spot with in the next season and a half.

With our next Pick at 80 we did not feel that our player would last until then so we had several deals on the table and we were able to get all the way up to pick 70 and take our next player.  We had to deal our 5th and 7th round picks but we felt the cost for this guy was ok.

Pick 70: Jan Mursak: LW: 
"Though small, he has tremendous speed and skill. He has soft hands and a very well developed hockey sense. He plays the game with lots of intensity and is willing to go the extra mile to get the goal."
Being a 6th round pick and being the 4th rated over all prospect for the Red Wings we felt this was a very good Value pick here.  Again he probably would not have been picked if he were not already playing in NA.  His size is of some concern but with guys like Penner, Ladd, and Stewart on the team already we feel that a player with his skill down the road will be protected.

Pick 105 Tim Kennedy LW: With only a few targets left on our board and one having just gone two picks before we felt that Tim would be a safe pick at this time.  Playing the in NCAA's and playing very well also a year past his own draft, being a year older then most in this draft.  We again felt that he is closer to AHL time then most. 

Being done for the night the Canes traded their 6th round pick for a 5th in next season's draft.

The Canes would like to thanks a potential future GM (FCormier) for his help in the draft and would also like to let the BOD know that he would be a very solid addition in the case of an open spot in the league.

Hes not eligable for the AHL... He'll be playing OHL again 100%.

nice writeup, but Kalus played exclusively LW in both the AHL and his callup in the NHL.

yes, i know what TSN says- but I watched him every NHL game and over a dozen AHL games and he was never at RW, he was pretty much exclusively LW.

He mostly played with Versteeg who was at RW, or towards the end of the year Karsums who played RW as well.
