Forsberg has been good as of late and is now at a point per game. IF he stays healthy he is a great player and a great addition to Nashville. 1-2 punch of him and Arnott now.
Philly gets two decent prospects in Upshall and Parent. Upshall hasn't developed very well yet at the NHL level. Parent is really the big name in the trade, and from what I heard from my friend who lives in Guelph, he hasn't been that great at the OHL level.
Nashville has a lot of top prospects and they could spare a few of their mid level ones. They are loaded at the D position with Hamuis, Weber and Suter.
Would Philly have gotten a better trade? Probably not. They really got a good package for an expiring UFA who may retire, or who may re sign back with them in the off season.
Forsberg gets injured before the playoffs and it'll look like a very bad trade (possible given his health problems).
What would one expect to make it worthwhile?
(1) Win the President's Trophy (already within a point of that) (2) Win the first round of the playoffs (first time ever for the franchise) (3) Win the second round, go to Conference finals (generate excitement in Nashville) (4) Win the third round and go to the Stanley Cup finals (5) Win the Stanley Cup
Clearly (5) would make it worth it. Even (4). Perhaps (3) given state of the franchise there. But would (2) be enough to consider the trade a wise choice? (1) is an accomplishment given how competitive Buffalo and Detroit are, but it'd leave many thinking the deal was a steal for Philly.
Following Upshall, Parent and especially seeing who'll be available with that 1st round pick and 3rd, will be interesting.
The jury is out on the trade. Very gutsy trade which is lopsided but which the Predators have said they can AFFORD, given their previous success drafting and developing talent already in the system.
BTW,... doesn't Forsberg look like a predator! those steely eyes and determined rock-on-skates stance... will be interesting to see (the Canucks fan in me still hurts over how he dismantled us in a hard-fought yet still Avs swept first round series back in 2001.

The draft picks are nothing. The first might as well be a 2nd. It's a very weak draft.
As Canes said, Preds have loads of blue chip prospects, especially defenseman.
This trade gives the Preds a player to market to fans. They needed a player like this to draw attention to the team. He will create a buzz in the city, even if they have an early exit in the playoffs.
They won't lose because of him or the prospects that they lost, but they could win the cup becuase of him.

Worth it even if (2), they get bounced in the first round? Then I suppose if he gets injured again during the last week of the regular season then you'd still think the trade was still a success, because the buzz factor will have been created. Interesting take.
Its a good deal because the Preds gave nothing up.
Upshall has only played 14 games this season and 10 minutes per game. Parent means nothing to the Preds as they have other young defensemen in Weber,Hamhuis, klein, fransen,Suter and Laakso Its not the strongest draft class so a 26th-30th pick overall and a 3rd rd pick does not really mean much.
The Preds gave nothing up of substance, they have so much depth it does not really effect them at all.

Well, if he gets injured in the last week I think it will be a disappointment for sure. I think the trade has already created a significant buzz in the city, and that would never have been accomplished by Parent or Upshall just because people down there don't know who they are.
I don't know how Trotz's plans on using Forsberg for the rest of the season, but if I had to guess I'd say they will use him sparingley until the playoffs just to assure he is there when it counts.
I think you are giving Nashville too much credit assuming they know who Forsberg is. Maybe the 5000 hockey fans in the city do, but most people that come to the stadium and the minimal corporate support they get don't know who he is. I don't think the "buzz" will exist unless they make the finals. Similar to the situation in Carolina. Until they made the finals the team received almost zero support from the city and the corporate community, and this is Nashville's last grasp at the same thing Carolina did. If it fails? Team will probably move in the next few years....
I disagree. The word on the street was that it took over the Nashville sports talk for the entire day.

I bet its important that Nashville win its first home game with forsberg, today Saturday, to fan the initial excitement.
By the way, new Flyer Scottie Upshall scored what held up as the game winner against the NYR in this afternoon's NHL action. He might be giving his all down the stretch to take advantage of the sort of opportunity he didn't get in Nashville, and show some that he's no throw in for a short-term UFA rental.

I hope he does. He was a great player for Canada at the WJC and I don't think he was getting a good chance in Nashville.
