After many heated debates, and lots of private discussions with GMs, here is the final process to the tagging process. This will be updated in the rules to ensure CLARITY, which is what was lacking in the first place. All other parts remain the same, who can be tagged, how often etc..
1. Franchise tags will be strictly an extension of the current contract effective season 3. 2. For season 1 and 2 it is RECOMMENDED a team extend the contract, however, you can elect to negotiate an extension. However, understand outright that a) We will be incredibly greedy as agents as you are taking a year away from the player on the open market b) If we do NOT come to an agreement on an appropriate value, that player CANNOT go back and say they want to sign an extension, basically you are giving the agent ALL of the power. c) Unless you bring an outstanding case as to why the player should make less, you are NOT going to win a negotiation. d) If that player does not agree to an extension, you ARE allowed to extend or negotiate with another player who would qualify for that tag, should you wish.
3. In the event a player signing an extension had a signing bonus on his current deal, that signing bonus will also proportionally be charged against the team. ie) Boston signs Doug Weight to a 2 year 5 million deal with a 3 million SB. As his contract expires, Boston tags him and extends his deal, they will be charged his salary of 5 million and 1.5 million as the SB for the extension.
4. A player signed as a UFA to a 1 year deal after season 1, WILL NOT negotiate an extension, he would only be able to be extended 1 season at the same contract.
I believe this should alleviate any and all concerns with the process, if you have any questions feel free to address them here.
